Is Protein Powder Contaminated with Heavy Metals?

Reading time – 5 mins

You’re not going to believe this, but it is possible for protein powders to be contaminated with heavy metals. Generally speaking, contamination is always possible, just like in the food we eat. That’s why we have food health & safety precautions in production facilities and at home.

Back to the heavy metals in protein powders.

We can’t speak for other brands. But we can assure you that StayAbove supplements are tested before and after manufacturing.

Before Manufacturing

We start by selecting only the highest quality ingredients from a network of our trusted suppliers. Each of these ingredients have been thoroughly tested for safety and quality. We review and assess all of this information prior to manufacturing any of our products.

After Manufacturing

After our product is made, we send samples from each batch to a third-party laboratory to test for an extensive list of chemical and microbial contaminants.

During this process, we also test the final product for its active ingredients to ensure they’re present at the right potency levels for both safety and efficacy.

Who Creates these Health & Safety Standards?

This process is regulated by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, the Public Health Agency of Canada, and Health Canada. The US operates very similar requirements and standards through the FDA.

While these standards are put in place by government agencies, it is a responsibility of the brand to create and consistently carry out a product quality system to ensure every batch manufactured will be both safe and effective. At StayAbove, we strictly adhere to these standards, and while not every brand does this, we feel its part of creating a safe and effective product that you can trust.

How Can I Make Sure the Protein Powder I Buy is Safe?

There are a few ways to ensure the protein powder you buy is not contaminated with heavy metals.

For starters, check the product license number. An NPN (Natural Products Number) means the product is licensed by Health Canada, which provide a list of approved health claims associated with the product. It will be visible on the front of the label.

You should also make sure the products you choose are third-party tested and look for products that are made in GMP facilities. Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) certified manufacturers require annually audits to maintain their certification.

Finally, and this step requires the most legwork, you can check for scientific proof of a product’s efficacy. By using Google and the National Library of Medicine, you can usually confirm a product’s safety and efficacy.
