Fast Facts about Vitamin D, Immunity, and COVID-19

  1. What is vitamin D? Vitamin D is a multifunctional vitamin that plays many important roles in your body, for example, bone, muscle, and immune health.
  2. Where do you get it from? The major source of vitamin D is sunlight exposure and vitamin D levels in your blood therefore fluctuate in relation to sun exposure throughout the year. Other good sources of vitamin D are your diet, such as fatty fish (salmon), eggs, and fortified foods (mainly dairy), and high-quality supplements.
  3. Are you at risk? It is estimated that over 1 billion individuals have vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency globally and that 30-50% of all children and adults are at risk. Some signs and symptoms of not getting enough vitamin D include fatigue, mood changes (e.g., depression), muscle weakness, and bone pain.
  4. What about cold, flu, and COVID-19 season? The collective scientific evidence points to that obesity, low muscle mass, and malnutrition (for example, low vitamin D and calcium) increase the susceptibility, severity, and mortality from COVID-19. For example, those that are deficient in vitamin D have 80% higher chance of contracting COVID-19.
  5. What can you do to boost your immune system? Exercise 3-5 days per week (strength & cardio), sleep 7-8 hours per day, stay hydrated (2-4 liters of water per day), eat in moderation according to the Canadian Food Guide, and supplement if you are unsure. Pay special attention to aforementioned key ‘immunonutrients’ vitamin D and calcium, but also high-quality proteins to maintain your muscle health. StayAbove Nutrition’s multi-ingredient supplement Muscle 5 contains all of these ingredients and has been shown in clinical trials to improve muscle mass, daily vitamin D & calcium intake, and serum vitamin D levels in both young and old. And don’t forget the other vitamins (A, B6, B12, folate, C, and E) and trace elements (zinc, copper, selenium, iron) that are important for a well-functioning immune system.
Thus, start boosting your immunity before the cold & flu season by staying fit and enhancing your intake of important immunonutrients, such as vitamin D, calcium, and high-quality proteins.  “Vitamin D is a critical factor in the maintenance of good health, and a high proportion of Canadians have deficient or insufficient levels. Current research shows that Vitamin D deficiency can lead to a host of secondary health complications, including a weakened immune system. Vitamin D supplements provide a cost-effective option to combat Vitamin D deficiency, supporting a strong and healthy immune system, which in turn helps protect against viral infections, such as COVID-19.” -Dr. Taronopolsky, PhD, MD Founder, CEO and CSO of StayAbove Nutrition Division Head of the Neuromuscular and Neurometabolic Clinic, McMaster Children’s Hospital Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine, McMaster University
